Rosewood Exuma: A precedent-setting case for environmental law and future development in The Bahamas

Her Excellency the Most Honourable Dame Cynthia A. Pratt, ON, GCMG, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Serves as Patron of Free Community Celebration at the Western Esplanade

NASSAU, BAHAMAS, October 15, 2026 – Imagine up to 1,000 people gathered around one enormous table stretching more than two football fields along Nassau’s historic waterfront. As the sun sets over the Western Esplanade on Saturday, November 14, Bahamians, residents and visitors will come together for an unforgettable evening of food, drinks, conversation and friendship, celebrating the simple pleasure of being together.

There will be no political speeches, fundraising or money changing hands. The event is completely FREE, and everyone is welcome. No invitation is necessary, but advance registration is required to ensure everyone has a seat at the table. The Longest Table Nassau offers an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and strengthen the sense of community at the heart of Bahamian life.

The international community-building initiative comes to The Bahamas for the first time, hosted by John Watling’s Distillery in partnership with Diane Phillips & Associates, with Her Excellency the Governor-General serving as Patron.

“When we first learned about The Longest Table, we immediately recognised its potential to strengthen our community,” said Pepin Argamasilla, Managing Partner of John Watling’s Distillery. “It took us about five seconds to say, ‘Let’s make it happen.’”

The concept is simple. Participants register to host or join tables of eight, with each table captain organising food and refreshments for their guests. Organisers will provide tables, chairs and tablecloths, while individuals attending on their own can join an existing table. JOHN WATLING’S will provide two complimentary cocktails for every adult guest.

“This is not a corporate event, political gathering or fundraising dinner. It is about building community and creating memorable moments, something that is at the very heart of John Watling’s Distillery,” continued Argamasilla. “Our home, the historic Buena Vista Estate, dates to 1789 and has long been a place where people come together to celebrate special occasions. The Longest Table is a natural extension of that tradition, bringing people together for an evening they will remember.”

The Western Esplanade, also known as Long Wharf, was selected for its historic significance, spectacular sunset views and ample secure parking, providing a memorable setting for the gathering.

“There is something wonderful about bringing people together around a shared table,” said Argamasilla. “It celebrates everything that makes The Bahamas special: our warmth, generosity, hospitality and, above all, our people.”

Adding a distinctly Bahamian touch, students from Blairwood Academy are creating a table runner featuring the national colours and children’s handprints, symbolising unity, friendship and the next generation.

The Longest Table traces its origins to New York City, where Maryam Banikarim noticed a family dining outdoors on a Manhattan sidewalk following the COVID-19 pandemic. When another family did the same the following day, she began imagining entire communities gathering around shared tables.

In 2022, Banikarim and Andy Lerner established The Longest Table as a non-profit initiative dedicated to strengthening human connections through shared meals. The movement has since spread across the United States and internationally to Argentina, France and Puerto Rico. More than 120 tables have been organised in 2026, with approximately 150 expected by year-end, more than three times the 47 held in 2025.

Enthusiasm for Nassau’s inaugural event has exceeded expectations, with more than 80 individuals and organisations expressing interest in becoming table captains within the first hour of the online announcement.

“We initially anticipated 500 participants, but the response has been extraordinary,” said Argamasilla. “We are now preparing for as many as 1,000, with businesses, families and community organisations eager to participate. It shows just how much people value opportunities to come together.”

“Now we want everyone to join us for this special evening. Gather your friends, family or colleagues and organise a table, or simply register on your own. Everyone is welcome, and there is a place for you at The Longest Table. All we ask is that you register in advance so we can have a seat waiting for you.”
